Indieventure Postcard #8: Comics, merch shitposting, and a Steam plea PUH-LEASE!

Hello hello hello Indieventurers! It’s time for another postcard!

The Ace Attorney merch shitposting will continue until morale improves

At some point over the weekend, my Ace Attorney merch display decided to rearrange itself. Specifically, my iconic and 100% canon Klapollo gay thoughts pin fell off the wall, hit Nendoroid! Apollo in the head and knocked his hair spikes clean off, before getting sort of wedged up behind him… chat does this mean anything? 👀

Literally just the physics of the universe endorsing my favourite AA ship, nothing to see here.

*Ahem* Onto more serious matters.

Shortly after Christmas, I did the thing! I collected all of the Ace Attorney sushi plushes (minus assorted GIANT and mini variants, and the inevitable 10 more they’ll probably announce next week but I won’t be mad as long as there’s some goddamn WOMEN because Trucy, Mia, Pearl, and Ema have all been done extremely dirty by this imbalanced bullshit… and not to immediately contradict myself but how the fuck did Rayfa of all one-shot assistants get Capcorom’d before those four queens… also RIP sweet Gumshoe, I promise I’ll never forget you even if Capcom clearly have…)

(Reading left-to-right and top-to-bottom) Top row: Phoenix (OG era), Maya. Second row: Edgeworth (OG era), Franziska, Godot, Apollo, Phoenix (AJ era). Third row: Klavier, Kay, Athena, Blackquill, Edgeworth (AJ era). Fourth row: Ryunosuke, Kazuma, Susato, Sholmes, Van Zieks. Bottom row: Gina, Iris W., Rayfa, Nahyuta, Masked Apprentice.

Anyway, I’d love to set up some skits with these adorable little beans now, but that’s not really something I’m resourced for pre-house move. But luckily I’ve had an even better idea to tide me over: QUIZZES. Obscure, nitpicking trivia quizzes based on a thing I know a hyperspecific amount about, a.k.a. possibly my favourite thing in the world.

So, starting with an easy one (for a given value of “easy” that requires you to know a fair bit about Ace Attorney, but FOTP Mick was able to solve it just by having listened to me bang on for the past five years so you should all be fine): solve the sequence in the picture. (I’ll chuck in the answer later.)

Hey Valve, can I have one of those Steam Machines? Cheers.

Valve! How you living, girl? Listen, I’ve got a qu- wait, what do you mean you don’t know who I am? Buddy, it’s me! Liam! I use your platform every day? Across multiple devices…? My steam account is 19 years old…?

Right. No, don’t worry about it. No no, honestly, it’s fine. I guess you have a lot of users.

Anyway, listen, I’ve been thinking a lot about the Steam Machine, the new hardware you announced last year. I’m not gonna beat around the bush here, Valve, seeing as we’re long-term pals and everything: I want it.

I don’t mean in six months. I certainly don’t mean over a year after I initially pre-ordered, like what happened with the Steam Deck. I want one next week.

See, my wife and I (you remember Yolli, right?) play a lot of games together on the big TV, and I’m getting real tired of having to hook up my laptop to do so. No human being should be forced to connect a laptop to a TV via HDMI. It’s grotesque, Valve. It’s indecent. Just picture it: me in my dressing gown, scrabbling around on the floor trying to find the perfect position where the laptop can be plugged in, connected to the TV, and angled in such a way that we can’t see its screen. Disgusting. I’m sorry for making you think about that.

The solution seems so simple: the Steam Machine! A magic little box that gives me all of the functionality and compatibility of the Steam Deck, but connected to my TV like a console. Honestly, the thought makes me giddy. Instant resume! Access to my Steam Library! Controllers that will always be connected, solving the issue I currently have where my laptop yeets the memory of my Xbox pad the second I close the lid.

Which brings us to my point: can you send me one? For free? To review on the podcast? Puh-lease? I promise at least one listener will buy one off the back of our coverage. No I won’t shake on it. Trust me, bro.

While we’re at it, chuck in one of the new VR headsets too, so I can bin off my Zuckerburg one.

Ta! Love you! God bless! Mwah! Xx

Liam

I’ve been reading a lot of comics, so here are some highlights

Since I’ve been playing less indies, I’ve decided to get back into comics and manga, so here are some of my favourites that I’ve read within the last month.

No.5 by Taiyo Matsumoto – I watched Ping Pong the anime years ago, and it’s remained one of my absolute favourite anime of all time. I decided to buy the manga and buy No.5 at the same time just on the cover art alone, and omg it’s SO GOOD. I’m obsessed with Taiyo Matsumoto’s style of drawing (It’s straight up beautiful) and I’m really enjoying how abstract and poetic No.5 is, whilst also being about superhumans protecting a post-apocalyptic planet. I already have Cats of the Louvre, Sunny, and Tokyo Days next on my list.

Baby Blue by Bim Eriksson – I want this entire comic tattooed on my body. I picked this up from a comic shop in Brighton, which had a queer creators section, and Baby Blue was sitting at the very top of the section like a shining crown. It’s about being queer, mentally unstable and a gang of women who are rebelling against their gross government, so yeah, I loved it. There are some incredible bits of dialogue that really cut me DEEP. There’s also one panel of a woman in a bunny mask wearing a leather jacket holding a submachine gun, so, yeah.

Witch Hat Atelier by Kamome Shirahama – I am very late to the Atelier party, but with the anime coming out this year, I picked up the first four volumes to read the manga before it was released, and WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG? This story about young witches is amazing, like my heart explodes at every page I read. I love the magic system, I LOVE the art, and omg the characters, I love them all. It’s wholesome,e but also there are stakes and tension and ahhhh. Incredible. The only thing stopping me from tearing through this series is my wallet.
