Rebecca’s Tiny Life Character Quiz (50th Episode Companion Post)

Hello, Indieventurers, and welcome to the supplementary materials for our big Episode 50 celebration! Rebecca here, and as some of you doubtless already know, I’ve been teasing this daft quiz idea I came up with, and which I only belatedly realised had a heavy visual component: not ideal for an audio-only podcast. Still, I am nothing if not stubborn, and also we have a blog for exactly this sort of nonsense now. So I am fortunately able to present to you my Tiny Life Indie Game Character Quiz as it was meant to be experienced: with, you know, pictures and that.

The rules of the quiz are simple: I’ve taken 10 iconic indie game characters and recreated them in Tiny Life, the indie Sims-like by Ellpeck Games that I’ve been obsessed with since its early access launch a couple of years ago. Tiny Life has an impressive character creation suite for a pixel-art solo-dev effort that’s still a work-in-progress, but there are obviously limitations; however, 25 years of playing The Sims without custom content has prepared me well for this moment (I hope). If you’d like, play along with Liam and Rachel and see if you can guess who’s who. (Answers are hidden under spoiler cuts.)

What you’re going to see on this page are the exact images Rachel and Liam saw live during the recording of the quiz. This is totally to give you the authentic experience of playing along with the hosts, and not at all because I didn’t get around to going back and fixing a couple of the screenshots that were a bit borked. Yeah. Let’s go with that.

Question 3

It turns out that one thing all life sim games have in common is that there’s about a 50% chance of the screenshot UI capturing itself when you try to take a picture. I thought I’d caught them all but evidently no! So as compensation, please take two lightly borked Live Mode screenshots of this character.

Question 6

As you’ll hear in the episode, I realised after creating this Tiny that I needed to age him up to adulthood before I could take any Live Mode screenshots, so here’s both versions in character creator as well.

    A curious thing — I tried looking at this before the episode, and I just *wiped out*. Couldn’t get a damn thing. I think part of how I identify characters must be tied to art style, and the change threw me for a loop?

    But then, listening to the episode and just listening to Liam and Rachel describe each of the characters and each article of clothing, while I tried to assemble a mental picture based on what they were saying, I had accurate “Wait, is that…?” guesses for 2, 4, 5, and 8 before the answers were revealed!

    Though… Liam may have been providing a bit of a hint with his choice of descriptions for #8.
